Video poker at bitcoin casinos: hunting for the better pay tables
I learned video poker on an old machine in a hotel bar, years before I had heard of bitcoin. What I liked then, and still like now, is that the game tells you its odds if you know where to look. The pay table is right there on the screen. Two games that look identical can pay back quite different amounts, and you can tell which is which in a few seconds.
When I started playing at bitcoin casinos, I assumed I would find the same choice. It took longer than I expected.
The game I play most is Jacks or Better. The key line on the pay table is the full house and the flush. A version that pays 9 for a full house and 6 for a flush, per coin bet, returns a little over 99.5% with correct play. The common cut versions pay 8 and 5, or even 7 and 5, and the return drops by one to three percent. That difference is bigger than most people think over a few thousand hands.
At the first three bitcoin casinos I checked, the video poker section had only one or two titles, and all of them used the reduced table. At one site the table was not shown until I opened a separate info screen, which I found annoying. The fourth casino carried a proper set of games from a studio that specialises in video poker, including a full-pay Jacks or Better and a decent Deuces Wild.
I also learned that the same game can come with different pay tables at different casinos, since some studios let operators choose. So I always check the actual numbers in the game, even if I have played the title somewhere else.
A few practical notes from the past few months.
Strategy matters. The return figures assume you hold the right cards every time. I keep a simple strategy chart open on my phone. Without it, I made small mistakes, like holding a single high card over a low pair, which cost more than I realised.
Coin size and max bet are worth reading carefully. Some versions pay a bonus on the royal flush only when you play the maximum number of coins. In crypto versions, this is sometimes simplified, sometimes not. I check before I start.
Video poker is often excluded from bonuses, or counts for a small percentage of wagering. I play it with my own balance only.
The bitcoin side has its own advantage. Hands are fast, stakes can be tiny, and withdrawals have reached my wallet in under an hour at the better sites.
To find casinos worth checking, I used a shortlist I trust as a starting point, then opened each site's game lobby and searched for video poker by name. The ones with full-pay tables were in the minority.
If you play video poker with bitcoin, spend two minutes on the pay table before the first hand. It is the cheapest edge you will ever get, and it is printed on the screen in plain numbers.
